To get a CDL license, you must pass a knowledge (written) test and a skills (road) test to ensure that you have the minimum knowledge and skill required to drive a commercial motor vehicle.

You will have to pass one or more knowledge tests, depending on the class of license and the endorsem*nts that you need. Each test will be scored separately. The passing score is 80% for all commercial knowledge tests.

The written test can only be taken at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

CLASSDESCRIPTION
AAny combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excessof 10,000 pounds. (Holders of a Class A License may, with appropriate endorsem*nts, operate vehicles is any lesser class.
BAny single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.(Holders of a Class B License may, with appropriate endorsem*nts, operate vehicles in any lesser class.
CVehicles transporting hazardous materials in placarded quantities in a vehicle having a GVWR of less than 26,000 pounds, and maypull a trailer having a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds; or a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver.(Holders of a Class C License may operate all vehicles within Class D.)

ENDORsem*nTS

In addition to taking and passing the knowledge and skills tests required for a particular class of vehicle, all persons who operate the type ofmotor vehicles described below shall take and pass specialized tests to obtain each endorsem*nt. The state shall issue endorsem*nts only to driverswho successfully complete the tests.

The following are some of the restrictions which may be attached to a Commercial Driver's License:
