Top FAQ's for the GWK-ICKeypad
What kind of batteries does this keypad use?
- The GWK-IC Keypad uses a single 9V battery.
How often should I expect to replace batteries on a wireless keypad?
- General battery life of a keypad should be about 2 years in a moderate, non-extreme environment (no extreme heat/cold). It is recommended to replace batteries on a yearly basis with a good quality brand, non-rechargeable battery. If extreme cold is a concern, replace batteries before winter and use Energizer AAA lithium batteries, which are rated down to -40C.
Someone stole my keypad what should I do? How do I clear a keypad from my opener head?
- In the situation where wireless device has been stolen or even if a device has simply been misplaced - you can clear out the opener head of any programmed devices to prevent unauthorized access to the garage, then reprogram all the available devices again. This means whatever device that is missing will no longer work the opener.

Will I lose programming in my keypad when I change the battery(ies)?
- No, the (remote, wireless keypad, wireless wall console) will retain its programming during a battery replacement. If you need help with battery replacement, reference the instructions for your specific device.
Every time I program one remote, another remote or keypad stops working! What is going on?
- Each garage door opener or receiver accessory can hold a pre-specified number of wireless (RF) devices. If you are programming another wireless device to your opener or receiver and find a different device has become unpaired – it is possible you have reached the wireless device limit for that product. Older openers and receivers may only hold up to 6 wireless devices where some of the openers manufactured today will hold 16+ devices and some professional grade receivers produced today hold 60+ devices! If you only have a few wireless devices to program and this scenario is happening, it is possible that over time, repeated programming of the same devices have filled up the spots unintentionally. It is recommended to clear all the wireless devices from the opener head and program the devices again.
Why won’t my keypad operate the garage door opener?
- Several things might have occurred that would cause this. Such as:
- 1. If you are using a wired wall console in conjunction with a wireless device such as a remote, keypad or a wireless wall console, check to be sure the Sure-Lock feature on the wired console is off (the backlight is red). When the Sure-Lock feature is on and the backlight is OFF, this will prevent wireless devices from operating the opener.
- 2. Dead batteries – Install fresh batteries inside your device and try again.
- 3. Lost programming – After a fresh battery install, try programming your device to the opener again.
- 4. Range issues where your wireless device works (or sporadically works) in close range but not otherwise. There are several factors that could cause range issues, even if your device was working fine just yesterday. Most Genie remotes operate on either a single 390MHz frequency or a dual 315/390MHz frequency. Any external devices that also operates within this frequency range can cause interference. Please review the list below of possible radio frequency interference offenders – you can investigate possibilities by removing the household item(s) listed below from power and retry the remote/wireless keypad/wireless wall console function to see if range improves. Please note that the items listed are usually not designed to operate within the 315Mhz-390Mhz frequency range but sometimes produce short range anomalies that cause interference unintentionally.
- • Common LED/CFL Light Bulbs
- • Security Systems
- • Wi-Fi Routers
- • Vehicle Accessories
- • Televisions
- • Other common causes include nearby airports, television or radio transmission towers, and military installations (land to mobile radios).
- If you have an older opener that only operates on a single frequency, a good solution for radio interference is a universal receiver kit option that allows you to upgrade your security and decrease the changes of interference by using two frequencies to communicate (instead of one).
Are you sure the code to access my garage is secure? What is rolling code and how does it work? What is Intellicode?
- Most garage door openers today operate with rolling code technology. Rolling code technology prevents piracy of the radio signal that opens your garage door by continually seeking a new code from billions of combinations. Many garage door openers in the past operated by ‘fixed code’ technology, also known as ‘dip switch’ technology. Dip Switch technology transmits the same, fixed security code each time the remote button is pressed. Because the number of available fixed codes is limited, it is possible that a fixed code garage-door system can be breached by an unsuspecting neighbor who inadvertently uses a remote with the same fixed code, or by thieves using code grabbing devices.
- Genie offers Intellicode Security which is a rolling-code technology that offers significant advantages over conventional garage door openers that use fixed codes. Every time your garage-door system is activated, our proprietary Intellicode system selects a new code from billions of possible combinations. This virtually eliminates the possibility of hacking, and it helps prevent unauthorized entry into your home through the garage door.
What is the warranty on my wireless keypad?
- The warranty on any residential accessory item is one year from date of purchase.
What if the LED on my keypad doesn’t light?
- If there is no LED present when pressing the buttons of a keypad, install fresh batteries in the device and try again.
