Time to get Village Ventures entries in THE WOMAN behind last year's winning Village Ventures project cannot recommend strongly enough participation in the competition. Caroline Foster, team leader of The Haven drop-in cen- tre at that the project received both a major cash boost to the tune of 12,000 and an enormous sense of satisfaction.

"Winning Village Ventures made a big difference to us," said Miss Foster, explaining how the money enabled the parent and toddler group to move from Ventnor Youth Club to a specially renovated room at the back of the town's unit- ed reformed church. The money was an immense boost. It gave us encourage- mentand it emphasised that we were on the right track. "It's nice to know that other people have faith in you, blowing away all the doubts you have in the back of your mind," said Miss Foster. The Haven is now working towards starting a second afternoon parent and toddler drop-in session and a Sunday group.

Deadline for entries for this year's IW County Press and Sainsbury's Village Ventures Competition is May 26, by which time groups, projects and organisations should have their forms with competition co-ordinators, the Rural Community Council. It is not too late to pick up an application, from the CP or RCC offices, both of which are in Pyle Street, Newport. More information can be obtained from the RCC on 524058. Deaths LANGLEY (Ernest). Publican calls time on traffic wardens NEWPORT publican and hotelier David Rudge has complained to the Island's most senior police officer after being given a parking ticket outside his Wheat- sheaf Hotel premises. Mr Rudge is angry he was given a ticket having left his Mitsubishi Shogun outside the St Thomas's Square hotel for ten minutes while he went inside to pick up a cheque book and cash and carry shopping list. Even though the vehicle is commercially registered, Mr Rudge said he received a ticket on the basis he had parked in a HGV-only loading bay. In a letter to Supt Alan Emmott, Mr Rudge said: "It seems incongruous to me that a police force under your direc- tion will not operate a zero-tol- erance policy of policing but can send out quasi military officials on the streets of the IW with absolutely no tolerance to indi- viduals. "I was under the impres-sion that you were trying to build bridges between the public and yourself hut the contrary seems to be the case." Supt Emmott said he could netcomment on an individual case.

But he confirmed that traffic wardens had in the past two years been instructed to keep the centre of New po rt clearer of traffic to create a bet- ter shopping area. "That stance may well have contributed to the recent statis- tic that more people are shop- ping in the town and that there is a better trading atmosphere in Newport," Supt Emmott said. Pool table theft THIEVES stole a f700 psol table from the Fairhaven Hotel, Shanklin. The coin-operated table was taken between March 28 and April 28. Pedestrian hurt A 71-YEAR-OLD pedestrian received minor injuries in an accident outside the Falcon pub in Regent Street, Shank- lin, last Friday afternoon.

Maria Lavis of Prospect Road, Shanklin, was in colli- sion with a car driven by Helen Laurie, 56, of Park Avenue, Ventnor. Mrs Levis was taken to St Mary's Hospital but was not detained. H. V.
